KCWildLands Ecological Restoration WORKDAY - Nov. 3,  9-12 AM

Kansas City WildLands -To Battle (again)!

When: Saturday, November 3, 9:00 AM to Noon

What: This is our Sixth Annual Honeysuckle Battle – We’ll be cutting down, treating and removing invasive, exotic bush honeysuckle that threatens the region’s incredible, fragile wild places. During the past five years, amazing progress has been made by Kansas City WildLands volunteers in removing shrub honeysuckle from these natural communities. This is a great community workday for our wild lands!

Where: Four KC WildLands sites will be targeted.

·         The Blue River Glades Natural Area, Kansas City , Missouri , managed by Jackson County Parks and Recreation.

·         Hidden Valley Natural Area, Kansas City , Missouri , managed by Kansas City Missouri Parks and Recreation Department.

·         Isley Park Woods Natural Area, Excelsior Springs , Missouri , managed by the City of Excelsior Springs.

This is a great opportunity for groups large and small to do hands-on restoration and conservation work on our urban area’s ever-dwindling wild acres. You will help make a difference to the wild areas of Kansas City that will be evident for years to come!

To register for this workday, or for more information, contact
Linda Lehrbaum at 816-561-1061, ext. 116 or Linda@bridgingthegap.org.

Be sure to dress appropriately for the workday – long pants, a hat and closed-toe shoes are highly recommended. Kansas City WildLands will supply work gloves and drinking water and will have tools on site. However, if you have loppers or small saws, bring them on out!

Eagle Days volunteers to staff stations - Dec 1 & 2

Service Hours Opportunity - Eagle Days - Dec 1 & 2 - this public event is hosted jointly by the MO Department of Conservation and the US Fish and Wildlife service at Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge near Mound City, MO. We are looking for volunteers to staff stations through out the day. Stations include Spotting Scopes outside on refuge, live eagle show (mostly indoors), and the exhibit area (indoor). There is a rotation schedule so that all volunteers get to help at all stations and no one has to be outside all day. MDC provides breakfast snacks, lunch, and drinks. If interested, contact Stacey Davis at 816-228-3766 or stacey.davis@mdc.mo.gov.

Missouri Environmental Education Assoc.  Annual Conference - Dec. 1

An Advanced Training and a Public Education (Service) Opportunity – The Missouri Environmental Education Association (MEEA) Annual Conference occurs Dec. 1 at the MDC Discovery Center just east of the Plaza. MEEA is a great networking organization for people involved in environmental education. This year's keynote speaker is Nancy Elliott, a member of the USA Today All Teacher Team in 2006 and a science and math teacher at Chillicothe RII. The educational sessions include a green design tour of the Discovery Center ; Global warming in MO, Ecology of a chain link fence; Need Funding? Ideas for getting grants; and much more. For more information contact Jane Weaver at weaverjc@missouri.edu. Cost is $45 for non-members, $25 for students and retirees. Scholarships are available.

* CHAPTER MEMBERS: Are you interested in having an informational booth at the MEEA conference, the cost is just $55 and Stacey believes that includes one registration. It would be a good place to get the word out about what MN is and what you do. Jan Weaver will have details if your interested - weaverjc@missouri.edu.

This is one of the activities requested in our 4Es sessions: If someone is interested in organizing a MMN both for this event let rgaines@rgaine.com know. Maybe we can organize a small team to pursue this.

Adopt-A-40 at Burr Oak Woods – ongoing

Here is more information from Danny about the Adopt-A-40 Program at Burr Oar Woods.

Adopt-A-40 Guidelines

ü      You may adopt 1 or more "40's"

ü      If you do not wish to adopt an entire "40", you and a friend may adopt a "40" together.

ü      No labor is required

ü      If you wish to perform labor on your "40", that is great

ü      Any work, other than observation or trash pick-up, must be approved by area manager

ü      Verbal or written reports must be presented to area manager a minimum of two times per year to remain in the Adopt-A-40 program

ü      Things to look for when surveying your "40" include but are not limited to:

Ø      Is boundary fence in good shape?

Ø      Are boundaries well posted with signs?

Ø      Are there major infestations of exotics/invasives in your "40"?

Ø      Any unique features in your "40"? (ie. glade, rock outcrops, etc.)

Ø      Any trash on your 40?

Ø      Are there a bunch of dead trees in the area?

Ø      Any special wildlife to note in your "40"?

Ø      Are there woody plants invading a prairie or open field?

ü      This program is open to volunteers and staff

ü      Acreages are listed on the sign-up sheet

ü      Choose an area on the map and sign-up on the sign-up sheet

ü      See Danny for detailed maps of your "40"

ü      Have a great time exploring new areas of Burr Oak Woods CA!

I hope this program allows you to become more familiar with Burr Oak Woods CA.  I know it will help me and my work team to get more up to date information on what is going on at Burr Oak Woods in a timely manner.  Thanks for all of your help!  Danny
